Los Angeles — South African music sensation Tyla has etched her name deeper into Grammy history, capturing her second consecutive Best African Music Performance award at the 68th Annual Grammy Awards held on February 1, 2026.

The 24-year-old artist, born Tyla Laura Seethal, claimed the prestigious honor for her chart-topping single “Push 2 Start,” becoming the first and only musician to win the category twice since its establishment in 2024.

    Historic Back-to-Back Grammy Victory

Tyla’s latest triumph follows her groundbreaking 2024 Grammy win for “Water,” which made her the inaugural recipient of the Best African Music Performance award when the Recording Academy first introduced the category to recognize contemporary African music on the global stage.

The timing of her second victory proved particularly meaningful, coming just days after the Johannesburg native celebrated her 24th birthday, adding personal significance to the professional milestone.

Competitive Field of African Music Giants

The South African star prevailed over a formidable lineup of African music heavyweights in the category. Nigerian superstar Burna Boy competed with “Love,” while fellow Nigerian artist Davido featuring Omah Lay presented “With You.”

Ayra Starr’s collaboration with Wizkid on “Gimme Dat,” and Ugandan artist Eddy Kenzo’s partnership with Mehran Matin on “Hope & Love” rounded out the nominations, making Tyla’s victory even more impressive given the caliber of competition.

    “Push 2 Start” Success Story

Released on October 11, 2024, “Push 2 Start” served as the lead single from TYLA+, the deluxe edition of her self-titled debut album. The track exemplifies what has become known as Tyla’s signature “Popiano” sound—an innovative fusion of Amapiano, pop, and R&B that has captivated global audiences.

Production credits for the Grammy-winning track belong to Sammy Soso, Ari PenSmith, and Mocha, whose collaborative work created the infectious sound that propelled the song to international success.

    Strategic Release and Chart Performance

Tyla strategically built anticipation for “Push 2 Start” by previewing the track during her performance at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards. The official music video, directed by Aerin Moreno and released in November 2024, further amplified the song’s reach through striking visuals that complemented its distinctive sound.

The single demonstrated remarkable staying power across multiple charts throughout late 2024 and early 2025. “Push 2 Start” maintained consistent positions on both the Billboard U.S. Afrobeats Songs chart and the UK Afrobeats Singles Chart, building the commercial momentum that ultimately contributed to its Grammy recognition.

    Cementing Global African Music Dominance

Tyla’s consecutive wins in the Best African Music Performance category underscore her pivotal role in bringing African sounds to mainstream international audiences. Her unique ability to blend traditional African musical elements with contemporary pop sensibilities has created a blueprint for cross-cultural appeal.

The achievement positions the young artist as a leading force in the global expansion of African music, particularly the Amapiano genre that originated in South Africa and has gained worldwide popularity in recent years.

    Rising Star’s Continued Trajectory

Since breaking onto the international scene, Tyla has consistently demonstrated her ability to create commercially successful music that maintains artistic integrity and cultural authenticity. Her Grammy success reflects not only personal achievement but also represents broader recognition of African music’s influence on the global entertainment industry.

The back-to-back Grammy wins establish Tyla as a defining voice of her generation, bridging African musical heritage with contemporary global pop culture in ways that resonate across continents and demographics.
