Filmmaker and life coach BI Phakathi has vowed to help struggling thespian Carlo Radebe, who is said to be surviving on the government’s R350 grant.

A social media post revealed this week that Radebe, who is a well-known actor and voice-over artist, was in desperate need of assistance.

I hear you, grootman Eugene, I really hope it doesn’t get there. It’s really sad to see all this unfold right in front of our eyes. It makes us re-think the contributions we have given to the arts. I hope and pray for better leadership https://t.co/4atv1jJekb

According to the post, written by Mauritz Neethling, Radebe was also affected by the Covid-19 pandemic and has been unable to get back on his feet and find work.

“Unfortunately for Carlo, he has not been able to get back on his feet and currently finds himself in a situation where he is struggling to sustain himself,” wrote Neethling.

“Evicted from his former residence, he is currently residing in the back of a remote smallholding outside Johannesburg.”

Neethling further stated that Radebe has been struggling to get back on the casting agents’ radar, send audition videos, feed himself, or have access to phone calls and data to receive e-mails.

Hi Minister @zizikodwa a gentleman named @mouthelightinguy reached out to us on social media regarding our thespian #CarloRadebe so I would personally ask you and the @SportArtsCultur to reach out and assist uncle Carlo, his CV speaks volumes, he cant be be suffering like this. pic.twitter.com/VHJDDmSTV4

Carlo Radebe, once a shining star in the entertainment constellation, now finds himself navigating the darkest of nights.

Renowned for his memorable portrayals of characters like ‘Duke Ngcobo’ on Backstage and ‘Sello Mvuyane’ on Generations, Radebe’s journey has taken a distressing turn, leaving him destitute and homeless.

Carlo Radebe Biography

Born in 1972 amidst the vibrant tapestry of Soweto, a sprawling township in Gauteng province, Radebe’s early years were marked by ambition and talent. Educated in his hometown and later at Sacred Heart College in Johannesburg, he honed his craft, eventually pursuing a formal education in drama at the Technikon Pretoria.

Once a luminary in the entertainment firmament, Radebe now finds himself eclipsed, his presence reduced to the shadows of hardship and adversity. Evicted from his previous dwelling, he now seeks refuge in the secluded confines of a smallholding on the outskirts of Johannesburg. It’s a far cry from the glitz and glamour he once inhabited.

Carlo Radebe’s Downfall

In a poignant plea that reverberated across social media platforms, a friend of Radebe’s issued a heartfelt cry for assistance. The COVID-19 pandemic, an unyielding force that reshaped countless lives, has struck particularly hard at those ensconced within the creative industries. Radebe, like so many of his peers, finds himself grappling with the aftermath, struggling to regain his footing in an unforgiving landscape.

Compounding his challenges is the stark reality of financial hardship. Radebe’s sole lifeline is a meager monthly grant of R350 from the government, a sum that barely scratches the surface of his mounting needs. With resources scarce and opportunities fleeting, the prospect of reentering the fray of casting calls and auditions seems a distant dream.

In the viral post, Radebe, like many actors, has failed to secure acting roles after the pandemic and has found himself relying on a government grant to survive. The post read: “Relying on a government grant of only R350 pm you can understand that this no way to afford him the means to get himself out there and back on casting agents radar and to let him send video audition clips let alone to feed himself or even take phone calls or have data to send or receive emails.

Appeal For Help

“I ask (with his permission) that you find it in your heart to help in whatever way or form you can to help this talented man regain some dignity and free him from this dark tomb he finds himself in…

“Let’s see if we can help one of our South African talents get back to a place where he can keep his head high and practice his craft with dignity.

“Thank you kindly ❤️. If you would like to make contact with Carlo the best way is through messenger or email. Email: carloradebe@gmail.com, Capitec bank: Mr LC Radebe, Saving acc no: 1320756954, Branch code: 47001.”

Carlo Radebe’s Career

As the curtain falls on Radebe’s once illustrious career, the narrative shifts from triumph to tribulation. Yet, amidst the despair, there remains a glimmer of hope—a hope fueled by the collective compassion and support of a community unwilling to let one of their own fade into obscurity.

For Carlo Radebe, the journey from stardom to destitution may be fraught with obstacles, but with the unwavering solidarity of kindred spirits, there lies the promise of a brighter dawn on the horizon
