Makhadzi, a Limpopo-born singer, made news after disclosing the remarkable lengths she took to attend the 19th annual BET Hip-Hop Awards presentation in Los Angeles, where she won Viewer’s Choice: Best New International Act. Despite having considerable financial issues, including a large debt to the South African Revenue Service (SARS), Makhadzi was able to fund her travel charges and attend the prestigious event.

Makhadzi, whose full name is Ndivhudzannyi Ralivhona, is well-known in South Africa and worldwide for her upbeat songs and lively live performances. However, her path to the BET Hip-Hop Awards was not easy. The singer admitted that she had to borrow money to attend the ceremony, indicating her financial struggles in recent years.

Makhadzi’s SARS debt has been a severe financial strain for her. Initially, she owed an incredible R6.6 million in delinquent taxes. She was able to lower this cost to R2.7 million by working with a tax professional. Despite this reduction, the remaining debt remains a significant challenge for the artist.

Makhadzi borrowed money to fund her travel to Los Angeles, determined to take advantage of the chance and promote South Africa on a global scale. Her efforts paid off when she received the Viewer’s Choice: Best New International Act award, demonstrating her growing popularity and the effect of her songs.

Makhadzi’s win in the Viewer’s Choice: Best New International Act category at the BET Hip-Hop Awards is a remarkable achievement. The prize acknowledges her ability and hard work, highlighting her distinctive blend of traditional South African music and contemporary elements. It also emphasises her music’s global appeal, which has an impact on audiences well beyond her native nation.
