TSHOLOTSHO, Zimbabwe — A nine-year-old girl from Matabeleland province has given birth, marking a deeply troubling case that underscores persistent issues of child protection and adolescent sexual health in Zimbabwe and across the globe.

The delivery occurred via cesarean section at United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH) on Monday, November 14, 2022. Clinical Director Dr. Harrison Rambanapasi confirmed the birth to The Herald Zimbabwe, announcing the arrival of a healthy infant weighing just over three kilograms.

Authorities have since identified the father as the girl’s 13-year-old cousin. Zimbabwe Republic Police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, addressing earlier and inaccurate social media speculation, confirmed the paternity on November 26. Both minors are now receiving support and counseling through the police Victim Friendly Unit.
While this case is extreme, it is not isolated. It brings into sharp focus the alarming reality of very young adolescent pregnancies. Medical professionals warn that pregnancies at such a tender age carry severe risks, including obstetric complications, lifelong health consequences, and profound psychological trauma.
Globally, similar tragic records have been documented. A nine-year-old in China reportedly became a mother in 2010, and a case involving a nine-year-old rape survivor was recorded in Malaysia in 2019. In 2006, a 12-year-old in Britain was believed to be the nation’s youngest mother.
These instances are often symptoms of broader systemic failures, including gaps in comprehensive sexuality education, inadequate child protection mechanisms, and deep-seated socioeconomic challenges. In many jurisdictions, sexual activity with a child below the age of consent is legally classified as rape or statutory rape, regardless of circumstance.
The case in Zimbabwe has ignited fresh calls from child rights advocates and health officials for intensified efforts to safeguard children, improve access to age-appropriate education, and strengthen community-based reporting systems to prevent abuse and exploitation.
As the young mother and her child receive specialized care, the incident serves as a sobering reminder of the urgent work required to protect vulnerable children and address the complex roots of adolescent pregnancy.
